Mental health depression is a result of trauma.

Research shows that 90% of people with mental health issues suffered, either in their childhood or in their adulthood, from a distressing experience, which eventually affected their mental wellbeing. Some people find themselves with low self-esteem trapped in a cycle of isolation, depression and anxiety. If it is not treated early, it can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder, PTSD.

Their research also showed that women were more likely to have been diagnosed with mental health disorders than men. Every day thousands of women feel trapped, lonely and overwhelmed. Thinking that something is wrong with them, feeling lost, confused and mainly not good enough. They don't realise that they have the power within to change their feelings and their reactions.

When you look at health and wellness you need to look at all aspects of a person not just their mental health. I believe that wellness is not dimensional it is a combination of spiritual, mental, physical and social health. We need to look at what happened to them in the past that led to the present moment. When the mind, body and soul are out of sync it impacts our psychological, emotional, spiritual, physical and social wellbeing.

Our feelings and actions are a result of one single thought. From the moment we wake up to the moment we go to sleep, our brain generates electrical impulses that fire neurons, which results in a thought process. Our external environment (such as home, relationships, media etc...) has a direct influence on our thought process. Research showed that people tend to react the same way to similar situations.

For example: thinking about a positive memory cause the brain to release dopamine, which leads to a happy feeling and a smile. A stressful thought generates the brain to release cortisol, which contributes to a low mood and result in a negative reaction. Because neurons, which are part of the circuit responsible for these responses, are firing up robustly leading to a reaction.

This means that shifting your mindset from negativity to a positive thought or trying to change a habit is possible. Being aware of a thought pattern, feeling or action will cause a change in the firing pattern of neurons, which eventually leads to new behaviour. In other words, you have the power to change your thoughts, feelings and reactions. By keeping a journal and writing down what thought led to behaviour will help you to be aware of your thought pattern.

You have the power to change the past, present and future. It is only a story that you keep telling yourself over and over again, which leads to negative feelings. If you anything like myself, the traumatic experiences have led me to many years of feeling sad, depressed and stuck in my own head. Choosing to let go of the past in the here and now made me feel in control and I took the power back.

“The most positive action we can take about the past is to change our perception of it.” Deepak Chopra

You can choose to think positive thoughts, empowering thoughts and you can train your brain to think them. Just like going to the gym, you are training your body to get fit and healthy, you can train your brain to shift your thoughts.

The way we think about ourselves and about our lives affects our health and wellbeing, leading to the way we see, feel, and behave towards ourselves and others.

Movement is part of our DNA to reclaiming life, when we deny ourselves and isolate ourselves at home, we get stuck in our head and the traumatic experience keeps coming back over and over again. When we shift our thoughts, we create new neurons pathways that make you feel better mentally, physically and spiritually.

Stop playing the same old story over and over and take control of your life. Life happens for you, not to you. You can choose to change your life story regardless of what happened to you in the past.
